After years of sailing the Rhine, Danube, Douro and Mekong, Windstar Cruises has an answer to “what’s next” with its new river-to-ocean cruising concept, connecting the river and ocean experience in one seamless journey. There are no ship changes or travel interruptions, creating a natural next step for seasoned river cruise travelers. The new category opens fresh opportunities for groups and special-interest travel, including wine-focused departures.
“River cruisers are among the most loyal and engaged travelers, but many have already explored the world’s most iconic waterways,” says Janet Bava, chief commercial officer at Windstar Cruises, in a press statement. “With Windstar, advisors now have a seamless way to retain those clients by offering something new: yachts that move from rivers to the open sea, unlocking destinations that traditional river ships and large ocean vessels simply can’t reach. It’s a natural next step for clients and a growth opportunity for advisors.”
Windstar Opportunities
Central to this concept is Windstar’s new all-suite yacht, Star Explorer, launching in December 2026. Built for river-to-ocean travel, the 224-guest yacht can access waterways too narrow for traditional ocean ships and coastal regions unreachable by river vessels. That capability allows exploration of destinations less crowded and more culturally connected while maintaining the comfort and style guests expect. The design sets a clear path for those ready to expand beyond Europe’s classic rivers.
Windstar’s group program adds another layer of opportunity. Group sailings start with as few as 10 guests and include benefits such as complimentary staterooms, shipboard credits and added commission opportunities. Through the Star Advantage Groups program, organizers can receive perks including a 1:7 tour conductor credit, bonus commission and onboard amenities. Group rates typically range from 5 percent to 10 percent savings, depending on availability.
Wine and culinary travel remain central to the offering. Itineraries explore regions known for wine, including Bordeaux, Portugal and Spain, with flexible options for customizing group departures focused on food and drink enthusiasts. The mix of culture and cuisine gives planners a platform to grow repeat business in new geographic areas.
Star Explorer’s 2027 itineraries will transition well for travelers who know the rhythms of river cruising. Impressionist France combines Bordeaux, St. Malo and Paris/Rouen, with overnights and access to the D-Day beaches. Connoisseur’s Delight features Northern Spain and Portugal, connecting the Garonne and Gironde rivers with the Spanish and Portuguese coasts. Moroccan Markets and Iberian Icons links Seville and the Guadalquivir with ports across Iberia and Morocco. Ireland Circumnavigation rounds the island from Cork City Quay on the River Lee to its Atlantic cliffs.
Additions to Windstar’s Star Legend, Star Pride and Star Seeker further expand this combined river and ocean concept in Europe, Canada and Southeast Asia, offering shorter getaways and long-haul adventures that build on the river-cruising style.
