Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), Germany’s third-largest airport, is set to open on October 31, 2020, after almost a decade of delays. This announcement comes as the world reels from the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.
The new airport, that is actually a new terminal on the other side of Schonefeld Airport, will replace Tegel and Schonefeld airports. It is also referred to as the Willy Brandt Airport.
“It was a long and difficult road to the final approval from the building authorities. The last three years of hard work have finally paid off. I would like to thank everyone who has not given up on BER and those who have made the passenger terminal a safe building little by little thanks to their great personal commitment and perseverance. The opening of BER can be a signal during these times that things are looking up again in the capital region and that the economy is getting back on its feet,” says Engelbert Lütke Daldrup, Germany’s airports chief, in a statement.
The Lufthansa Group will be moving its Berlin flights to this new airport in addition to Brussels Airline, Swiss and Austrian Airlines.
