As a powerful coastal storm menaced the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast this weekend, major airlines have stepped forward with measures to assist affected travelers.
According to the flight tracking site Flightaware, American Airlines, Delta, United and JetBlue have all announced they will waive flight change fees and fare differences for passengers traveling through impacted areas.
The National Weather Service has issued flood and high-wind warnings for a large swath stretching from Portland, ME to Newport News, VA. The storm is expected to bring severe weather conditions—including heavy rain and strong winds—with disruptions anticipated through Monday evening.
Here’s How Airlines are Responding:
American Airlines waived both flight change fees and fare differences for passengers who were booked on Sunday flights to or from airports between Portland, ME, and Newport News, VA. Travelers can reschedule their flights for later in the week without incurring additional costs.
Delta has implemented waivers for passengers traveling on Monday, Oct. 13, 2025, for flights to or from Boston Logan International (BOS), Newark Liberty International (EWR), JFK, LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Norfolk International (ORF).
United has waived fees for passengers flying through Boston Logan, Newark Liberty, JFK and LaGuardia airports; rebooking to be completed by Monday, Oct. 13, for travel through Oct. 15.
JetBlue is waiving charge fees and fare differences for affected passengers flying through Boston Logan, JFK and Newark Liberty through Oct. 15, 2025.
Serious Flooding; Emergencies Declared
With heavy rains and strong winds expected to last through Monday, the storm’s impacts have included:
- All of New Jersey has been under a state of emergency since Saturday night. It’s expected to last into Monday, authorizing the state’s emergency services personnel to be activated as necessary.
- New York Gov. Kathy Hochul issued an emergency declaration for eight southern counties in her state as the storm gained strength Sunday evening. She urged people to monitor forecasts and avoid travel.
- The Georgetown Marketplace in Georgetown, SC flooded early Sunday morning. Several motorists had to be rescued as 10 inches of rain were reported.
- Wind gusts over 40 mph have been reported across parts of Delaware, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and the Carolinas.
In addition, stronger winds have developed along and near the coast from eastern North Carolina and will spread northward to Long Island and southern New England on Monday. Wind gusts could reach 60 mph at times; sustained winds, especially over 40 mph or with severe gusts, are normally enough to ground flights. Passengers in affected areas are advised to check with their airlines.
