MSC Cruises’ new ship, MSC World Europa, goes beyond green to emerald green with its luxurious take on environmental sustainability. It is, in fact, touted as “the world’s most environmentally advanced cruise ship” and the brand’s first vessel powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), which takes a giant leap toward MSC’s end goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.

“Our guests from the U.S. have been thrilled to cruise on board MSC World Europa during her inaugural season in the Arabian Gulf, and many more of them are flocking to Europe as she starts her first summer season in the Mediterranean,” said Ruben A. Rodríguez, president, MSC Cruises USA, in a press statement. “This groundbreaking ship exemplifies our unwavering commitment to sustainable cruising. MSC World Europa’s innovative environmental and marine technologies represent a major step forward on our journey towards meeting our target of net-zero emissions by 2050, and it offers a glimpse at our future in the U.S. as we move toward bringing MSC World America into service in 2025.”

It’s Not Easy Being Green, But MSC Cruises’ MSC Europa Does it Well

LNG is, in fact, the cleanest marine fuel available at scale, and, according to the press statement, virtually eliminates local air pollutant emissions. The MSC World Europa is the first contemporary cruise ship to feature LNG-powered solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology. But that’s not the only major environmentally-friendly feature this ship has to offer. The MSC World Europa literally plugs in while it’s docked to reduce carbon emissions; it has a very advanced wastewater treatment system, treating wastewater to near tap water standards—and even treats ballast water—; it has a team dedicated to implementing its strict waste management protocols; the ship has an underwater “radiated noise management” system; plus, plus, plus. It’s safe to say there is very little MSC hasn’t thought of in terms of reducing its overall ecological footprint.

A Look Inside the Ship

This is the MSC World Europa’s first season in the Mediterranean, a spectacular background for a spectacular vessel that’s packed with restaurants, jaw-dropping entertainment options, beyond-fun kid spaces (the largest in the fleet) and the spectacular World Promenade—the heart of the ship day or night, for entertainment, water views, amazing architecture and the longest dry slide at sea (11 decks). This is your clients’ one-stop-shop for cocktails, dining and shopping. There are a total of 10 bars and lounges and 13 restaurants, including the Chef’s Garden Kitchen, which features the first-at-sea hydroponic garden and gives diners a unique immersive experience, plus the line’s first onboard microbrewery. There is, of course, a plethora of leisure and wellness facilities, plus the premium MSC Yacht Club—in this case, the fleet’s most luxurious. The cabins have all-new designs, including Infinite Ocean View staterooms in the MSC Yacht Club.

MSC World Europa is sailing this summer in the Mediterranean Sea with 7-night itineraries with stops in Italy, Malta, Spain and France.
