Kempinski Hotels has acquired the Augustine Hotel, Prague, marking its first property acquisition in more than 50 years. The move signals a strategic shift toward a more asset-heavy portfolio under CEO Barbara Muckermann, with the last such investment dating back to the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten Kempinski Munich in 1970.
Located in Prague’s historic Mala Strana beneath Prague Castle, Augustine Hotel, Prague, which will be reflagged as Kempinski in late 2026, is set within the centuries-old Augustinian Monastery of St. Thomas. The more than 800-year-old site remains an active monastic community, with the hotel occupying a defined portion of the historic complex.
Augustine Hotel, Prague features 101 guestrooms, including 20 suites, many of which feature original vaulted ceilings and wooden beams, retaining the authentic structure of the monks’ former living quarters; speciality restaurants including two distinct bar concepts including The Refectory Bar, previously the monastery’s former dining hall; a spa and fitness center; The Monastic Library, a library hall housing a collection that spans centuries of theological and scientific thought; and outdoor terraces and gardens.
“Opportunities to acquire hotels like Augustine Hotel, Prague are exceptionally rare,” said Muckermann in a media statement. “This investment offered a unique and compelling opportunity to secure a heritage asset in a top-tier European luxury destination….”
