Journey Beyond Rail has opened bookings for its 2027 season, introducing an expanded itinerary for The Ghan and new travel opportunities aboard its Great Southern route. In 2027, The Ghan’s northbound journey from Adelaide to Darwin will become a 3-night, 4-day trip, extending the rail experience through South Australia and the Northern Territory.
“The Ghan holds a special place in the story of Australian travel, and guests have been asking for more time to experience its remarkable landscapes,” said David Donald, Executive General Manager of Rail at Journey Beyond, in a press statement. “By extending the northbound journey, we’re allowing travellers to slow down, deepen their connection to Country, and discover Outback Australia in a way that is both immersive and unforgettable.”
Australia by Rail
The extension aligns the northbound route with the existing Ghan Expedition outbound itinerary. Departing from Adelaide, your clients begin with a dinner in one of South Australia’s wine regions before heading north through the rugged Flinders Ranges, which Lonely Planet has recognized as one of the top 25 destinations for 2026. The added day allows guests more time to engage with the landscape and explore cultural experiences throughout the outback. The itinerary continues through Marla, Alice Springs and Katherine before concluding in the tropical Top End.
The 2027 season also expands the Great Southern lineup with two new holiday packages in collaboration with Outback Spirit. The 7-day Queensland Hinterland Spectacular includes coastal rail travel and inland touring, beginning in Adelaide and concluding in Brisbane, with visits to Mount Tamborine, Lamington National Park and a stay at Spicers Hidden Vale. Southbound, the 8-day Spectacular Kangaroo Island journey starts in Brisbane and ends in Adelaide, featuring an overnight stay at Monarto Safari Resort and guided exploration of Kangaroo Island’s wildlife and coastline, along with a visit to the McLaren Vale wine region.
Journey Beyond is also continuing to elevate the onboard experience with the Aurora Australis Suites. Available on The Ghan, Indian Pacific and Great Southern throughout the 2027 season, these private suites feature dedicated bedrooms, ensuite bathrooms and personal service. With nearly all 2026 slots sold out, reservations are strongly encouraged.
City Stay packages return with curated pre- and post-journey hotel experiences in Sydney, Adelaide and Perth. Options include stays at boutique and waterfront properties, combining local culture and cuisine with the rail experience. In South Australia’s Murraylands, Monarto Safari Resort continues to offer an overnight Stay Wild package, including dawn or dusk wildlife safaris.
