The Press Hotel, an Autograph Collection property, located in a former Portland Press Herald newspaper building, opened this past May in Maine. The boutique property offers 110 rooms, including a Penthouse Suite with exclusive rooftop access and 360-degree views of the city. Each guestroom is inspired by a 1920s writer’s office and features a vintage-styled journalist desk as well as newsroom references, and the bathrooms feature a reeded glass door similar to those in historical newspaper offices. Prints by Portland-area artists decorate the accommodations, and authors’ quotes are sprinkled throughout the property. Other fun touches include “Hot off the Press” French-pressed coffee, typewriter-key-styled bar coasters, “Beat reporter” note pads and a “letterpress art wall” at reception. Guests should peek into the hotel’s art gallery, showcasing works by Maine artists, and definitely grab a bite at the intimate UNION restaurant, where the chef, a Portland native, creates dishes unique to the area. Hotel guests can also head to the Akari spa, located steps from the hotel, for cleverly named spa treatments inspired by the history of the hotel, including The Baseline (the line on which the bases of capital letters sit), and The High-Resolution (the measurement used in typesetting to express quality of output). Room rates start at $269 per night. For more information, visit thepresshotel.com; autograph-hotels.marriott.com or travelagents.marriott.com/travelagents.
