Amazing Escapes has announced the grand opening of Kachi Lodge, the first luxury dome lodge on the Uyuni Salt Flats of Bolivia.
Kachi Lodge is located at the foot of Bolivia’s Tunupa Volcano at an altitude of 11,800 ft. and offers impressive views of the world’s largest salt flats. The lodge offers six luxury bedroom pods with private bathrooms, as well as an oversized lounge dome set on a wooden deck overlooking the salt flats.
Adventure opportunities include downhill mountain biking on the edge of the Tunupa Volcano, trekking to the volcano’s crater, experiencing the giant cacti of Incahuasi Island, and hiking to the peak of Kachi Island for sunrise or sunset views. During the rainy season from December to March, guests can also paddleboard across the Salar.
Cultural excursions can include a visit to the village of Jirira to experience the daily llama herding routines and participate in seasonal planting and harvesting of quinoa. Other possibilities include viewing the archaeological site of Alcaya, colonial constructions of Coquesa, and an antique train cemetery, all of which are located a short drive from the lodge. Kachi is also equipped with telescopes and expert guides who can provide insight into Andean cosmology and ancient cultural beliefs about the constellations.
Kachi Lodge has a partnership with the Gustu Restaurant and school in La Paz and has established strong relationships with local suppliers in order to showcase the region’s authentic cuisine, culture and biodiversity. The lodge also features art installations by Gaston Ugalde, a well-known contemporary artist in Bolivia, some of which are available for sale. Kachi is a low environmental impact structure powered by solar energy and features a high-tech water treatment system that provides running hot and cold water and simultaneously recycles it in a closed loop, minimizing consumption in a system that is virtually self sufficient.
