Our collection of screen tourism hotspots highlights the destinations bringing the magic of TV and film to life.”

The holidaycottages.co.uk team’s experts have shared six filming locations in Scotland that feature in Del Toro’s movie as well as other popular movies and TV shows that draw upon Scotland’s evocative landscape.

1. Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh is one of Scotland’s most historic cities, and its Canongate and Royal Mile districts served as a backdrop for scenes in Del Toro’s movie. The colder months are the perfect time to visit, as the city takes on a darker, cozier charm. Be sure to visit one of Edinburgh’s oldest pubs while wandering its cobblestone streets in the footsteps of Frankenstein’s monster.

2. Dunecht House, Aberdeenshire, Scotland

Head further north from Edinburgh and explore Scotland’s sprawling highlands and coastlines. The city of Aberdeen sits directly on the coast, and just a few miles outside the city is Dunecht House, which served as the location of Victor Frankenstein’s ancestral home in the new movie.

3. Gosford House, East Lothian, Scotland

Gosford House is a Neo-classical mansion set amid 5,000 acres of parkland and coastline, which served as both the exterior of the Frankenstein estate and the staircase from the wedding scene. The estate was also a filming location in TV shows ‘Outlander’ and ‘The Awakening’, and regularly serves as a popular wedding venue throughout the year.

4. Glencoe, Scottish Highlands

The dramatic mountains, sweeping valleys and otherworldly beauty of Glencoe in the Scottish Highlands served as a location for scenes in Netflix’s ‘Frankenstein’. It was also a filming location for the movies ‘Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban’ and ‘Highlander’.

5. Glasgow, Scotland

Footage filmed in Glasgow’s cathedral didn’t make it into the movie’s final cut, but director Del Toro commented on how the city’s gothic architecture inspired his vision. The lower chapels and gothic arches of the cathedral were also used as a location in the TV show ‘Outlander’.

6. Hospitalfield House, Aberdeenshire, Scotland

Hospitalfield House is a historic estate that doubles as an arts centre, and was used as a location for Netflix’s movie. Its turrets, towers and balconies overlook a lush, floral garden and make it one of Scotland’s most charming spots.
