As world travelers, we’ve had the opportunity to visit many family-friendly destinations worldwide, but few offer the magic and diversity of Sri Lanka. This teardrop-shaped island on the Indian Ocean is not only rich in culture and natural beauty but also an incredibly welcoming destination for families. On a recent trip, we experienced Sri Lanka through the eyes of our children, and I’m here to tell you it’s a family paradise worth sharing with your clients.

Our journey took us to three extraordinary properties owned by Resplendent Ceylon, the luxury travel arm of Dilmah Tea, and part of the prestigious  collection. Each property—Ceylon Tea Trails in the misty tea country, Wild Coast Tented Lodge on the edge of Yala National Park and Cape Weligama along the breathtaking southern coast—offers a unique family-friendly experience, balancing luxury, adventure and relaxation.

Ceylon Tea Trails: A Journey to Sri Lanka’s Heart
Our adventure begins in Sri Lanka’s central highlands at Ceylon Tea Trails, a collection of colonial-era tea planter bungalows set among lush, rolling hills carpeted with tea bushes. The cool climate, scenic views and serenity of this property made it an ideal introduction to Sri Lanka for our family.

Travel advisors, take note: Families will love the sense of space and freedom at Tea Trails. We stayed in Norwood, one of the spacious bungalows, which was perfect for our family of five. With individual rooms connected by common living spaces, we had the privacy we needed while still enjoying time together. Each bungalow also comes with its own team of butlers and cooks, making the experience feel incredibly personal. Our children were fascinated by the idea of having a butler, and it certainly helped us relax, knowing someone was always on hand to assist with anything from meals to excursions.

What makes Ceylon Tea Trails particularly exciting for families is its immersive tea experience. Our children had the chance to walk through tea fields, meet local tea pluckers and even tour the factory where the world-renowned Ceylon tea is made. The educational aspect is subtle yet impactful, offering a glimpse into the importance of tea in Sri Lanka’s economy and culture.

There are also a range of activities that cater to all ages, from afternoon hikes with views over Castlereagh Lake, to swimming in the bungalow’s pool and cycling through the estate’s quiet paths. Tea Trails provides guided hikes through mist-covered valleys and mountain bike rides through scenic routes, ideal for keeping active kids entertained while allowing parents to take in the stunning scenery.

The ultimate recommendation: Encourage clients to partake in the afternoon tea on the bungalow terrace. Sipping perfectly brewed Ceylon tea while the children play on the lawn, surrounded by verdant hills, is a quintessential experience your clients will cherish.

Wild Coast Tented Lodge: Safari Adventure with a Touch of Luxury
Next stop on the Sri Lankan itinerary is the Wild Coast Tented Lodge, an exquisite property located on the fringes of Yala National Park. If your clients are looking for a thrilling adventure, this is the place to send them. The lodge is designed to resemble the shape of a leopard’s pawprint from above, perfectly blending into its wild surroundings. The combination of wildlife safaris and luxurious accommodations made this stop a hit with both the adults and kids in our family.

The lodge is comprised of luxurious tents that mimic cocoon-like pods. We stayed in a family Cocoon Suite, which offers two cocoon-shaped tents connected by a small wooden footbridge—one for us and one for the children. These tents are far from rustic; they are beautifully designed with teak floors, freestanding bathtubs and private outdoor spaces, offering both comfort and a sense of adventure.

Yala National Park is renowned for its wildlife, particularly its population of leopards. The lodge arranges twice-daily safari drives, and I highly recommend it for families with adventurous children. My kids were wide-eyed during our safari, spotting elephants, crocodiles, peacocks and even the elusive sloth bear. The guides are extremely knowledgeable, keeping the kids engaged with fun facts about the animals and helping them identify wildlife. For travel advisors, this is an easy sell to families looking for an immersive and educational wildlife experience without sacrificing luxury.

In between safaris, there’s plenty to keep the kids entertained. The lodge has a gorgeous free-form pool where we spent afternoons swimming and relaxing. The lodge’s eco-friendly philosophy also provides great educational moments for children, who learn about conservation efforts in Sri Lanka and the importance of protecting natural habitats.

One of the highlights for us was the afternoon sundowners. Guests can gather by the beach with refreshing drinks and canapes in hand, watching the sun dip below the Indian Ocean, while the wild beauty of Yala unfolds around them.

For families with older children, the lodge offers more adventurous activities like nature hikes and private dining under the stars. For advisors, pitching this as both a luxury escape and an adventure-packed vacation is sure to resonate with families eager to bond in the great outdoors.

Cape Weligama: Coastal Bliss and Family Relaxation
The final stop on this journey is Cape Weligama, a stunning clifftop resort overlooking the southern coast of Sri Lanka. After the excitement of safaris and tea trails, Cape Weligama is the perfect place for families to relax and unwind by the ocean.

The resort’s layout is ideal for families. We stayed in a spacious villa, complete with a private terrace, pool, and breathtaking ocean views. The kids will love the freedom to swim at any time, while mom and day enjoy sipping cocktails and watching the sunset over the ocean. For larger families, Cape Weligama offers connecting rooms and private villas, providing the right mix of space and togetherness.

For families who enjoy water sports, Cape Weligama offers plenty of ocean activities. They can try their hand at surfing for the first time. Snorkeling, whale-watching tours and diving trips are also available, making it easy for families to explore the rich marine life. While we were content lounging by the resort’s crescent-shaped infinity pool, more adventurous families can take part in these thrilling excursions.

Beyond the beach, the cultural experiences offered at Cape Weligama should not be missed. Guests can take a day trip to the historic city of Galle and visit the old Dutch fort, meandering through charming cobblestone streets lined with boutiques and cafes. It’s a fantastic cultural addition to a beach stay, offering your clients a bit of history and insight into Sri Lanka’s colonial past.

For dining, the resort’s restaurants cater to families with diverse tastes, from freshly caught seafood to traditional Sri Lankan curries. Our children were adventurous enough to try a variety of dishes, but the chef was also happy to prepare more familiar, kid-friendly meals. Dining at the Chef’s Table will definitely be a highlight for your clients, as it is a private experience and the only restaurant on the island where the chef prepares a custom menu of progressive Sri Lankan fine dining right before your eyes.
