The Maldives reopened for international travel on July 15, enabling U.S. citizens and international travelers to visit its resort islands. On Aug. 1, guest houses and hotels on inhabited islands will also reopen.
Due to the destination’s remote location and new safety procedures, it will reopen with limited restrictions. Detailed information on the reopening protocols can be found here. Properties in The Maldives have also implemented their own cleanliness and hygiene protocols on the islands.
To launch the reopening, The Maldives Marketing and PR Corporation (MMPRC) hosted a virtual press conference on July 15. Speakers included Hon. Abdulla Ameen, Minister of Health, and Mr. Thoyyib Mohamed, managing director of MMPRC. The press conference launched the islands’ new destination marketing campaign, “Rediscover Maldives…the sunny side of life,” which aims to strengthen the destination’s market presence and welcome back tourism.
As of July 2020, Emirates Airlines, Etihad, Qatar Airways and Turkish Airlines have all resumed service to The Maldives, and hotels such as Banyan Tree Maldives Vabbinfaru, Taj Coral Reef Resort and Spa, and Four Seasons Resort Maldives at Landaa Giraavaru have reopened.
While hotels set to reopen by Aug. 1 include Vakkaru Maldives in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll, and Six Senses Laamu on the remote Laamu Atoll in the southern Maldives. Other resorts reopening in August include Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi, Bandos Maldives, Royal Island Resort and Spa, and more.
