Resilient Lady, the third ship in Virgin Voyages’ fleet, will now launch in spring 2023 instead of this August. The 2,700-passenger ship was originally scheduled to make its debut this summer in the Greek islands.
Virgin Voyages said in a press statement that it did not land on the decision to defer the launch lightly. It cited global challenges, including supply chain issues, staff shortages and the restrictive COVID entry requirements back into the U.S., as reasons for the decision.
“As a new brand that is just getting started, we’ve accomplished so much this past year, and the future for us is exciting,” said Tom McAlpin, CEO of Virgin Voyages, in a press statement. “The momentum that we’re seeing with Scarlet and Valiant Lady is incredible. The fantastic reviews and awards our ships and crew have won are very heartening, so we thank our guests for sailing with us. That is why we remain focused on delivering brilliant vacations, and this pause will ensure we will be ready to go on Resilient.”
Virgin Voyages will be contacting passengers booked the Resilient Lady’s affected voyages to offer “generous make good options”, according to a press statement. These include a 200% Future Voyage Credit (FVC) or a full refund of the amount paid, plus 25% FVC and assistance with associated travel changes and penalties. Those who choose the 200% Future Voyage Credit option and rebook on another journey in 2022 will receive an additional free voyage, excluding taxes and fees. The cruise line will also protect travel advisor commissions on funds paid.
Resilient Lady’s sister ships, Scarlet Lady and Valiant Lady, are currently operating in the Caribbean and Mediterranean, respectively. In April, Virgin Voyages revealed the name of its fourth ship, Brilliant Lady, which is expected to join the fleet in 2023.
